Most likely you would have to determine if a collision was elastic. Kinetic energy is conserved only in elastic collisions; therefore, if you are asked if a collision is elastic, check the initial and final kinetic energies. If the kinetic energies before and after are the same, you have an elastic collision. If the final kinetic energy is different than the initial kinetic energy, the collision is inelastic, and the kinetic energy must have been converted to other kinds of energy, such as heat or sound, or work done by a non-conservative force exerted by one object on the other.
